You look over my shoulder to the left, You see the light of morning rising You say "you better finish that cigarette, cos that's the dark of night and it's dying" Yes, that's the shroud tonight and it's dying So I flick my cigarette over the railing to my right Watch it fall and explode below in that building site The embers searching for something to ignite The embers searching for something to ignite So I lift my glance up to your lips and the cup upon which they are sipping "It's going to be hard to get out of this night without kissing" No we won't get out of this without kissing No, we won't get out of this without kissing No, we can't get out of this without kissing And we shan't get out of this without kissing

I wish I would think less about my own death, or at least it weren't non-erotic auto-asphyxiation by which I went. Yes and I wish I would think less about my own death, or at least it were by someone else's hands.

Put down your defenses I'm not throwing any punches, not tonight. You've sat on the fence, and I've jumped right over. This relentless feeling, it ain't gonna move on. So slide on closer, let me hold you in my arms. I spin you on the dance floor, held in my cradled arms, you laugh and say you can't stand it anymore. You say I'm too fun and I said "well honey the night's just begun, it'll end in fucking tears". You like music we can dance to, I like music that can make you cry as I make love to you. So put on the record player on this little barge of a boat. I know you're living with another man, I can see his coat. Don't let that get in our way Your reflection in the mirror, Oh! it sways as you put on your face. You say you're a feminist and I like women who don't protest when I start to undress them. You like music we can dance to, I like music that can make you cry as I make love to you. Give me back the things I gave you if you really think that way. All those records and those letters on which I did say: I would wait, I would wait, I would wait. I won't wait.

about

A handful of rough drafts of songs mainly written and recorded in one take in my living room. A good chunk of the lyrical prowess was improvised as the songs played out. The record flips between track 5 and 6. All of the backing instrumentation done with a looper pedal. Except Track 4. That's an episode of the X-Files in the background.

This record is split into two parts.

Part I: Songs for Lost Lovers
Tracks 1 - 5

Part II: Songs for Disaster and Disgrace
Tracks 6 - 9

credits

released March 1, 2016

All songs written, performed and recorded by Robert Doherty with the exception of Track 6, Tonight Was A Disaster, written by Owen Ashworth of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and performed and recorded by Robert Doherty.
